How to Install Decorative Shelves

Decorative shelves are a great way to display items while adding a stylish look to your home. Decorative shelves come in a variety of shape, styles and finishes. Brackets help support the shelves and mount them to the walls. While brackets are not needed for all types of decorative shelves, they make installation much easier.

Decorative shelves are a great way to display items while adding a stylish look to your home. Decorative shelves come in a variety of shape, styles and finishes. Brackets help support the shelves and mount them to the walls. While brackets are not needed for all types of decorative shelves, they make installation much easier.

Items needed:

  • Stud finder
  • Tape measure
  • Shelf brackets
  • Pencil
  • Level
  • Wood Glue
  • Screws
  • Drill

Step 1: Use the stud finder to locate the studs in your walls. Installing your decorative shelves to studs keeps them from falling. Drywall is not durable enough to withstand the weight of the shelves and the objects they display. Stud finders can be purchased from most home-improvement stores.

Step 2: Use a tape measure to measure the distance between the ceiling and spot where you want your first shelf to hang. Be sure to measure along the stud as this is where the shelf will be mounted. Use the pencil to mark the spot.

Step 3: Hold a shelf bracket up to the spot you marked with a pencil. Place the level on the bracket and adjust it until it is level. Use the pencil to mark through the screw hole on each side of the bracket. These marks are where you want to place the screws that hold the brackets in place.

Step 4: Use a drill to drill the screws through the bracket and into the wall studs. This mounts the bracket to the wall. Be sure to place the screw on the pencil mark before you start to drill.

Step 5: Place the shelf on or in the bracket. Some brackets have a place for the shelf to slide in, and others will require the shelf be mounted to the top of the bracket using wood glue or screws. If you are using glue, place a few drops on top of the bracket and lay the shelf on top of it. Press the shelf and bracket together and hold them until the glue dries. If you are using screws, be sure to place the screws in even distance from each other.

Step 6: Repeat these steps to install any other shelves you wish to install. You can use the tape measure and level to help line your shelves up with each other if you choose to install them in such a way. Be sure to allow any glue to dry before placing items on the shelves.
