Tips on How to Use Log Splitter

These wood splitters are precision equipment thus they need to be activated correctly. The machine works by having a sliding platform where the log is positioned where it will then be pushed up at the vertical end. The log will then be slid at high pressure against a sharp wedge on the other end where it will then be split.

Most of log splitters are made with steel with self-lubricating hydraulic rams that return to the start point automatically. Most of these machines have a two-handed operation that it needs both hands of the operator for it to work. This however will ensure the safety of the operator’s hands at it will keep them out of harm’s way. A very powerful machine for home use has around ten tons of ram pressure.

Below are some tips on how to use a log splitter:

1) Safety first. It is best to use safety goggles, ear plugs and gloves.

2) Only adults that have training in the proper use of a log splitter should use the machine.

3) Ensure that the log splitter is secure on a flat surface.

4) Before operation check the amount of oil and petrol. Manufacturers will include in the manual the right grade of oil and petrol that needs to be used for optimum performance of the machine.

5) Ensure that the hydraulic fluid inside the drive piston. If the fluid is still visible through its window then there is still enough.

6) Do not use the machine near populated areas where it knots and splinters that can fly from the log can cause damage.

7) It is best to use the machine in a remote area since the noise that the machine creates is very loud.

8) Set the choke while the machine is still free of log. Place the choke to the start point and then let it operate for some time. Set the choke until the log splitter is smooth running.

With hydraulic splitters that come in either foot powered or electric powered options, the times of strenuous and time consuming labor just to have sufficient wood for burning has come to an end. With this machine you can split and store wood at anytime of the year for use during the winter season.
